This image from the national tree lighting at the Capitol shows a lovely Ulmus americana lit in a brilliant shade of periwinkle. Four rows of Elms lining the length of the Mall were planted in the 1930′s and through effective disease management and replacement program, the stand of 2,700 elms continues to flourish. There is even one individual who’s vigor is such that soft wood cuttings have been made and new, disease resistant clones are being planted not far from the parent tree. Awesome!
